Watercolor, 12 x 18" |
As Halloween approaches I start to feel all the sprites and goblins in the woods nearby getting ready to wreak havoc. And feeling that tantalizingly creepy feeling down my spine I painted this spooky cat. Well she's an adorable fluffball, sure, but you should see what she gets up to after dark. I will call her Minnaloushe as she perfectly sums up Yeats poem. Have a scary, shivery Halloween from Minnaloushe and me ....
and the moon spun round like a top,
and the nearest kin of the moon,
the creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
for, wander and wail as he would,
the pure cold light in the sky
troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
what better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
tired of that courtly fashion,
a new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
from moonlit place to place,
the sacred moon overhead
has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
will pass from change to change,
and that from round to crescent,
from crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
alone, important and wise,
and lifts to the changing moon
his changing eyes.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful :)
ReplyDeleteOH - perfect painting to go with Yeats. Wonder if he got those cat names from The Book of Practical Cats! Love your paintings - and your pets - too cute on the pet part and just beautiful and lush on the paintings. Will be looking for you again - Maryland is not so far from South Jersey where I am.
ReplyDeleteJoy!

Fantastic painting, your style is so original and fascinating!
ReplyDeleteVery very cute. I think animals are the hardest things to draw.
ReplyDeleteWonderful poem and I totally love the cat. :)
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job capturing the feel of the cat's soft fur, and your poem is very charming. Happy belated PPF!
ReplyDeleteThis is really beautiful - so often pet portraits are just bad copies of photos but I love your interpretation. It gives the cat personality (or should that be purrsonality?)
