A Modern Day Mr Darcy?

Pride & Prejudice | Because this cover sums up so much. #colinfirth #mrdarcy
Fans of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice have always known that Mr. Darcy is a fine man. Now scientists have proof.  In scientific lingo:
The pheromone that attracts female mice to the odour of a particular male has been identified. Named ‘darcin’ by researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Biology(after Darcy, the attractive hero in Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice”), this unusual protein in a male’s urine attracts females and is responsible for learned preference for specific males. – Science Daily

But seriously, even though we can only imagine what he might have smelt like ... Mr Darcy has been a perennial fave with the ladies both because he said many romantic things as well as being able to work a wet shirt while emerging from a lake.

But hang on one ticketyboo moment, while Mr Darcy may encapsulate romance to so many, unfortunately....he isn't real.

SIGH

So it was wonderful for me, who is somewhat cynical about love, romance and all that jazz, to hear that a blogging buddy called Charlotte Harborne, who after getting divorced met a lovely well mannered gent who she calls Mr Darcy. She told me all about the witty little exchanges she and he have and before I knew it I had cast my cynicism aside and penned the pictures to her adventures. This is one soap opera I will enjoy following ......watch this space and read all about it on her blog.

Would love to know what you think about my first cartoon for this series. And what about you ...do you ever wonder what your fella is talking about down the pub?

  1. What an intriguing post! I do love all things Jane Austin. I personally feel that Mr. Darcy, while not real, represents a typical male point of view. Only seeing the world through his own self-loving view until he falls in love. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I'd love to be able to hear what my OH and his friends talk about at the pub! I ask but I'm sure I'm not getting all the info!

LOVE Mr Darcy - I love the language and the wet shirt.

I love your cartoon very much.... it made me smile :)

  4. Because we live so far out in the wilds, mine never goes to the pub! I'm more of a Captain Wentworth fan than Mr Darcy, although I do still love him. I'm afraid the BBC's decision to plunge him into a lake and whoever the insipid woman who played Elizabeth in that production, made my blood boil as a pedantic Austen purist! David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie in the 1980 production were magnificent. She WAS Elizabeth. You can still get it on DVD and well worth it if you feel inclined. Fay Weldon wrote the script. Have you seen the 'Death Comes to Pemberly' that was on here over Christmas? I thought it was great. I''ll stop rambling now....sorry Emma! Love the cartoon by the way. x

  5. Your cartoon really brings out the romanticism of Mr. Darcy. I have only read the novel, not seen the TV version though. I do feel that Mr. Darcy represents the kind of person who keeps quiet until moved deeply by emotions that he can no longer suppress.

  9. Love the cartoon, although I think that his words could be taken either way! Who doesn't want a bit of Mr.Darcy in their lives though - I bump into Colin Firth quite often, either locally or at parties, and I have to say, he does have a Mr.Darcy-esque twinkle in his eyes! Thanks for linking up with #AllAboutYou - new link up goes live tomorrow, do hope you'll be back Emma!

  10. Zarouhi Zaz How intriguing that you are acquanited with Colin Firth. I really fancied him as the bumbling fool in the Bridget Jones movie .... brings out the mothering instinct!!

  14. Great cartoon - although I must admit, I doubt even the wonderful Mr Darcy wouldn't always refrain from pub talk! Thank you for making contact :) your work is wonderful! xx

  16. Great cartoon! Not sure I believe in real Mr Darcy's though. Look what happened to poor old Bridget Jones' fella - this type of man cant be allowed to marry and have happy endings, clearly!

    1. Maddy......ooh yes I think I heard that Bridget's marriage to Mr Darcy went pear shaped in that he kicked the bucket [HOW?] in the new book Mad About the Boy and Bridget becomes a single mum. Have you read it? But I suppose some people like to believe there's a Mr Darcy somewhere out there for them!
