Does the Easter Bunny Exist?

Benji and Barney, Rabbit Pals by Emma Kaufmann, watercolor and inks

As soon as I saw Lola Robert's photo of her rabbits Benji and Barney I knew I had to paint them. They are too cute for words! She lets people paint pictures from her photos through a site called Photos for Artists so do check out more of her work as I can't post it here.

I ended up doing a bright splashy painting in watercolor and inks. Don't you just love it?

I have always loved the Easter Bunny and all the work he has done for me over the years painting Easter Eggs with his network of Bunny pals underground and then somehow spreading his colorful bounty all over the world come Easter.

Honestly I believed in the Easter Bunny way longer than maybe I should have...I'm thinking maybe until I was thirteen. That's because every Easter Sunday, when I lived in London with my mother I would walk or ride on my bike to Regent's Park. Sometimes with my mum, sometimes on my own.

And I would look behind the trees and I would find Easter Eggs.

It didn't matter which part of the park I went I would find Easter Eggs. For a long time I didn't even think that my mother might have put them there but even if she had did she really get up at the crack of dawn to hide them all over the park?

It doesn't seem likely. It seems like Easter Magic.

That's why I believed in the Easter Bunny for so long. In some ways I still believe in the Easter Bunny. Because if you really believe with all your might then sometimes you might find a wonderful choccy Easter egg in the grass like my guinea pig Marshmallow did last year.

So what do you think, should you let kids believe in fanciful notions like the Easter Bunny as long as possible or give them a cold dose of reality before they reach puberty?

  1. Easter is a mess of imagery - chicks, bunnies, bunnies that bring eggs?? Some guy dying on a cross and we're meant to be happy about it...it's all over the place....

    1. I know, how did Jesus on the cross come to be associated with Easter eggs? I am rather partial to a hot cross bun though 😃

    2. Easter Eggs are actually related to Christ and the cross... only it was just a Red Egg... Story goes that Mary went and talked to Pilate after Jesus' death and resurrection and Pilate told her "Sure he rose from the dead... He would no sooner do that than that egg would turn the color of blood!" and hey...he asked for it...the egg turned red before their eyes and so started the tradition of eggs to celebrate the resurrection :)

  4. Wow, love all of those wonderful colours and bunnies are one of the cutest things to paint. Great stuff! I love Easter too. We do a big chocolate hunt in our house with lots of hidden clues. My daughter loves it still even though she's no longer a believer.

  8. Let them believe. There's enough cold reality and not nearly enough magic in our world as it is. Love the bunnies! Thanks for joining the Pet Parade

  9. I am in LOVE with your colorful bunnies Emma!! I hate to say it, but in this day and age with all the social media stuff, bullying, and how much quicker kids learn about things I'm afraid they are losing those magical times at too early an age. Happy PPF and have a great weekend! 64 degrees here yesterday-and over 4" of snow so far today-AND very cold and in the teens and twenties tomorrow-:( I hope your weather is a bit better in MD.

  13. Oh my! Those are some super bunnies! I love the technique you used to make them stand out so well. Gorgeous job. I believed in Santa till I was 12 and probably the oldest kid ever at my school to hang onto that. The EB was not something my parents did although I had cousins who believed in EB.

  18. I usually have a bit of a fear of bunnies but think you have captured such a lovely playful nature in this painting. It is gorgeous. I think you should encourage magic in kids as long as possible and even though I know some things are not real there will always be a part of me that still believes and that is very special. Thank you for linking to #stayclassymama xx
