The Eye of the Leopard

Inspiration struck to paint a leopard a little bit abstract....to try and get to his energy and really make it sing. I used watercolor and black pen (but first a bit of masking fluid for the whiskers etc).

Visitors from England are arriving on Monday and I am bracing myself. They are bringing my 2 year old nephew Jack and I will watch him some of the time as my teen kids are still in school (after that they can watch him). I was not apprehensive or nervous about having kids fifteen years ago and they were tumbling, climbing, very active girls. But I do think I have become something of a couch potato over the years so wonder if I will be able to keep up with Jack at my age!!

Those were the days my friend. When I had my two little girls I would often be mistaken for the nanny at the playground. Maybe because I had an English accent in the USA or maybe it was down to my dewy skin and youthful smile lol. But most likely because I did not hover around them when they were on the climbing frame like so many of those helicopter parents you see about the place, anxious and driving themselves bonkers with worry that something could happen to their kids.

Of course all the Hollywood moms have kids in their mid-forties...usually by gestational surrogate and that's fine because nannies are going to be minding them most of the time. But what about this woman in India who became a first time mum in her 70s just now? How would anyone have the energy. Although they say you become more patient as you get older. I just feel more tired.

Well I will enjoy hanging out with the young moms at the playground and having a good old natter about lots of things the modern moms are into and I don't 'get' like men in beards and skinny jeans and maybe eating disgusting kale and spirulina smoothies for breakfast. I just hope no one confuses me for Jack's grandma.

Leopard Love

Roaring Leopard, Watercolor

Leopard, Watercolor on Gesso

Hi Everyone!

Hope you had a fun and creative week. I had a pretty great week in that I sold my colorful giraffe painting so that was good. It snowed on Tuesday but I do NOT want to talk about it! I want spring and I want to see all the little shoots coming up in my garden.

I am still fascinated by wild cats. First I did a colorful loose watercolor of a Roaring Leopard who is full of vim and vigor and color. Then I painted another roaring leopard on paper I first coated with gesso. It certainly makes for a very intriguing effect - very textural and more muted.

I am enjoying experimenting with watercolor. I have learnt to love the way it just does its own thing - ebbing and flowing and pooling and dribbling. And sometimes I just have to rein in the temptation to remove sections of paint I have just laid down that don't seem right and instead just let it drip and dry the way it wants to because you can't tell what it is going to look like until it dries. What an infuriating yet fascinating process!

What about you? Do you like working with watercolor or does it bother you that sometimes it has a mind of its own?

Hear the Leopard Roar!

 Happy PPF Everybody!

What a wild week it's been! Moving outside my comfort zone I am trying my hand at wild animals. Hey watch out this kitty's got claws! Had a lot of fun dripping the watercolor and then overlaying it with chalk pastel. The result is somewhat scary but it's nice to be heading in a new slightly wild direction.

I feel just like this leopard this week. As Katy Perry so memorably sang in her song ROAR:

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
'Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar

What do you feel like roaring about this week?
